What is Assisted Living?

Assisted Living provides a supportive environment for seniors who need help with daily activities but still want to maintain a level of independence. In New Jersey, assisted living offers a range of options, from luxurious three-bedroom apartments with full kitchens and multiple baths to more compact efficiency apartments with partial kitchens and baths.

Minimum requirements for assisted living:

  • Three meals a day are provided.
  • Weekly housekeeping and laundry services included.
  • If needed, assistance with three or more activities of daily living (ADLs), such as dressing, grooming, bathing, eating, transferring, continence care, and toileting.
  • 24/7 staff availability to respond to residents’ health and safety needs.
  • The cost for these services can vary greatly depending on the level of care and amenities provided.

Assisted Living Services & Amenities

Assisted Living typically includes a basic package of services and amenities included in the rent. What each community includes varies quite a bit. Before a move, an RN assessment is conducted which determines the care needs. This will determine the care cost portion of your monthly fees. In this setting, your care package means that staff will come to your apartment or residence at specific times as defined in the care plan.

Here’s a list of what might be included:

  • 24 hour on-site staff

  • Utilities; water, heat, electric, trash, sometimes phone, cable, internet
  • Transportation for shopping and health care appointments
  • 1-3 meals a day plus snacks
